MOSA Opening Night this Sunday!

It's an opening-night celebration that will have us on our feet....and eating cake! Don't miss iconic Cuban pianist, arranger, and composer Manuel Valera in this foot-stomping, heart-lifting showcase of Afro-Cuban grooves and an updated songbook of soul. Joining him are long-time collaborators Hamish Smith on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums. I’ll also make a cameo appearance, releasing a single right at the concert, featuring a new work by Cuban composer Paquito d'Rivera. Come for the music, and stay for the after-party!

This concert celebrates the beginning of Hispanic Heritage month by highlighting one of this season's musical threads: Afro-Cuban influences on NYC musical life. Sample Manuel's sound above and we look forward to seeing you Sunday at 5pm!

Manuel Valera is the leader of "Manuel Valera and the New Cuban Express," a project deeply influenced by the experiments of Cuban artists from the 70s and 80s. While inspired by artists Irakere, Emiliano Salvador and AfroCuba, this touring band creates a unique and distinctive style that mixes elements of Jazz, R&B, fusion and funk with Cuban music styles. Expectativas (MAVO 2013) is the follow up and seventh recording as a leader to his 2013 Grammy nominated New Cuban Express (MAVO 2012) which was up for Best Latin Jazz Album of the Year.
